When you think of women from the 1950’s, you may think all they did was clean. What else was there time for? Well in my Housewife Routine, there’s a spot specifically for hobbies and other interests. You can probably guess then what I’m writing about for you today, dear reader: hobbies you can pick up as a modern woman that are still fun and useful today. Let’s jump right into it!

Knitting:

Knitting is a fun and fulfilling skill you can easily get addicted to. It’s so much fun being able to make something and use it with style, whether it’s a bright washcloth for dishes, or a multicolored winter scarf.

Crocheting:

Much like knitting, crocheting is a fun, and oddly addicting hobby. Nothing is quite as satisfying as handing someone a gift that they think you got off Etsy or Amazon, only to find out it is, in fact, your very own handiwork.

Quilting:

This is something that has been a popular hobby for women for centuries. The oldest known quilt is over 300 years old, meaning women have gathered for over 300 years to stitch and gossip to each other about the latest.

Sewing:

Even older than quilting is good old sewing. Sewing dates back to 18,000 BC. where animal skins were used to create coverings for early humans, and since then, clothing has become a necessity. Since modern clothing manufacturers came into existence, sewing has become less of a necessity, and more of something fun to do if you want an item that’s custom and unique.

Stitching:

Hand-stitching and hand-embroidering is such a fun way to make something truly your own. You can make a plain old pillowcase like new with a little scalloped stitch along the opening. Or some flower stitches poking out of your shirt pocket can make a simple garment feel more fancy.

Baking:

The only hobby you can eat! Baking is a wonderful way to spend your time. It takes patience, skill, and a steady hand to make the perfect petit four or frosted cookie. It’s exact measurements and lots of love to create something perfectly from scratch.

Reading:

Some women liked Nancy Drew, some liked Lord of The Rings, and some liked the local news paper. Whatever your fancy, books have something for you!

Shopping:

If you’re like me, chances are, if you had a million dollars, you’d go on a shopping spree. I know I would. I’d get a bunch of beautiful vintage dresses, shoes, and accessories, along with make my house perfectly vintage.

This is kind of a mini-post. I just wanted to write something fun for you to read. Please Google or YouTube some of these hobbies and try them out for yourselves!
